An Annual Event
20th Chua Chor Teck Memorial Lecture 2006 – CCTML 2006
Mr. Charles Foo delivered the 20th Chua Chor Teck Memorial Lecture held at the Singapore Polytechnic Auditorium on 24th January 2006. Over 500 people attended the lecture and were captivated by Mr. Foo’s recounting of “An Apprenticeship Journey” which covered over 40 years of personal experiences in Singapore, Liverpool, Taiwan and China and at the same time giving insights of the development of the marine industry in Singapore.
Mr. Ronald Pereira was the chairman for the lecture. Mr. Teh Kong Leong, Chairman for CCTML Committee was the emcee the event. Mr. Cheng Huang Leng launched the Chua Chor Teck Memorial page on the SNAMES website.
A photo gallery was put up jointly by Singapore Polytechnic, Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd and us at SNAMES who also put up a panel on tributes to the late Mr. Chua Chor Teck besides our own SNAMES Heritage panel.
A booklet containing quotations from tributes made by acquaintances of the late Mr. Chua was specially printed and distributed during that evening.
For those interested to have a copy of the booklet and also the full transcript of Mr. Charles Foo’s lecture, please email Joan at admin@snames.org.sg for a copy.
The transcript will also be put up on the SNAMES website soon. We invite all to participate in this project by contributing your thoughts, views, comments or even story of your own journey. Please submit your contribution either to our email to admin@snames.org.sg or fax to (65) 6-281-2231 or by posting to 11A Hamilton Road Singapore 209182. Hopefully, we can gather enough views to form a book on Singapore Maritime History through the experiences of the people in the industry.

SNAMES on the Local Scene
Discussions with Singapore Professional Centre and Careers 2006
SNAMES has held several meetings with Singapore Professional Centre to discuss membership. SPC represents 14 professional societies and institutes, and they provide secretarial services for these organizations.
We intend to hand over the secretarial work to SPC and free our own fulltime staff to concentrate on managing the society’s activities, which in turn will free up the council members to focus on strategic issues of advancing the society.
SNAMES will also be taking part in Careers 2006, an exhibition and careers fair organized by SPC in which we will be organizing a panel of speakers from the industry to present and discuss on “Careers in the Marine Industry”
to students and job seekers on 5th March 2006, Sunday at Suntec Singapore from 1700 hrs to 1830 hrs. So if you happen to be in that area during that time, do come by to share your expertise with the audience too.

| SNAMES Family Day
SNAMES 2005 Family Day took place over the weekend during 26th ~ 27th November at Sebana Cove in Johor.
Fun for the children started on the ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. After checking into the rooms, everyone was treated to a buffet lunch after which we hopped onto the buses to go on a Fruit Farm Tour. In the evening, a special arrangement was made to bring the whole group out on a boat ride to the mangrove swamps for fireflies watching. Although there was a slight drizzle, it lasted only a short while which did not dampened the spirits of our group who were amazed by the huge number of fireflies which glittered like the lights on a Christmas tree. As for dinner which followed on, we sure were not disappointed as the spread for our seafood barbecue buffet dinner was sumptuous and it sure made our tummies happy as well accompanied by a “live” band onstage at the dining area. After dinner as we headed for different night activities which even saw a group having a marathon mahjong session till 6 am!!
Sunday morning was free and easy, late breakfast, walks around the jetty, swimming or just lazing around the pool or just going to sleep for some (after a night of dry swimming). After lunch, we went for our last visit for the trip which was to Ostrich Farm and left Sebana Cove at 1600 hrs for our way back to Singapore.
We would like to thank the Activities committee and Joan for organizing the successfully event. Also to all participants for this enjoyable Family Day.

Directory of Marine Expertise in Singapore
SNAMES is in the process of developing a Directory of Marine Expertise, which originally was to showcase the expertise within SNAMES membership, however we were encouraged by the support to develop this into a national project to expand the directory to gather all the data of all the people in the marine industry in Singapore and to include more professional information on the bio data.
We request for all members to support this project by contributing your data on the form which is now being circulated. Please help out by disemminating the form to all your contacts so that we can reach out to as many as possible.
A copy of the form will be made available on our SNAMES website at www.snames.org.sg . Alternatively, you may wish to email Joan at admin@snames.org.sg for a copy.
