Chua Chor Teck’s Qualifications
This list was compiled from certificates and documents kept by the late Mr. Chua' family.

1959

Obtained (through self-study and as a private candidate) 4 GCEs at O-Levels. The subjects were English, Mechanics, Mathematics and Physics.

Completed 4-year course in Mathematics, Mechanics, Science and English with 1st Class Certificate from the Dockyard Technical College, Singapore. He was overall 1st in his batch.
1960

Obtained (through self-study and as a private candidate) 6 O-Levels (with distinctions in Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics and Technical Drawing.

By coming in 1st in his final year examination at the Dockyard Technical College, he was chosen to attend a 24-day Outward Bound School (at Lumut) course. Programme included doing a boat and sail related project, athletics (jumping, throwing, sprinting and long distance running), sailing (5.5 days) and cross-country expeditions. He did 5 covering a total of 98 miles! It is interesting to note that he gained one pound at the end of the course!

Obtained (through self-study and as a private candidate) the Full Technological Certificate (1st Class) in Shipbuilding from City & Guilds of London Institute.
1961

Passed “Direct Current” Section of the City & Guilds of London Institute’s Intermediate Examination in Electrical Engineering Practice.

Passed City & Guilds of London Institute’s Intermediate Examination (1st Class) in Mechanical Engineering Design.

Passed City & Guilds of London Institute’s Intermediate Examination (1st Class) in Structural Engineering.

Passed City & Guilds of London Institute’s Intermediate Examination in Mathematics for Telecommunication C.

Obtained (through self-study and as a private candidate) 2 A-Levels in Mathematics and Physics.
1967 
Awarded the Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson Scholarship by the North East Coast Institution of Engineers & Shipbuilders, UK.
1968

Obtained 1st Class Honours in Naval Architecture B. Sc degree from University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Associate Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, UK.

Attended Management, Personnel Management, Human Relations and Accounting courses conducted by the Singapore Institute of Management.
1969
Attended Labour Legislation and Industrial Relations courses conducted by the Singapore Institute of Management.

Foreign Affiliate Associate Member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, ISA.

Techniques of Efficient Speed Reading (improved from reading rate of 195 words per minute at commencement of course to 765 words per minute at end of course. Certificate awarded by the Advanced Training Techniques (S) Pte Ltd.
1974

Honorary Member of the Old Engineering Apprentices Association (of Naval Dockyard).

Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineers, UK.
1975

Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, UK.

Professional Engineer registered (date not known) with the Singapore Professional Engineers Board.

Chartered Engineer, Council of Engineering Institution, UK (date of registration is not known)
1976
Corporate Member of the Society of Naval Architects Singapore. He served many years as its President and through his initiative to include the marine engineers, got the society re-constituted as the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Singapore (or SNAMES).
1978
Completed the Advanced Management Program conducted by the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University.

City and Guilds of London Institute, Silver Medal Award for top candidate in Shipbuilding Examinations.

1968 The University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, Burrill Gold Medal Award for top graduate (in Naval Architecture).
1976 Public Service Star Award by Government of Singapore for public service.
1980 Friend of Labour Award by the National Trade Union Congress, Singapore.
